Wayne Rawstern 1934-2013

Wayne Irwin Rawstern, 78, died February 25, 2013 near his home in Onida, S.D.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, March 2 at Sully Buttes High School Gymnasium. Interment was at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery.

Wayne was born April 20, 1934 in Huron, S.D. to Irwin and Clara Rawstern. He grew up in Onida along with his two brothers and sister.

He attended school and was soon working full time in road construction. He married Mary Zebroski on August 16, 1954. They settled in Onida with their six children soon after. He went to work for Lamb’s Chevrolet and later worked for local farmer, Elton Eller. He remained there until his retirement.

After retiring, Wayne stayed busy helping out many farmers during their harvest seasons. He was known for his woodshop and the many projects that came out of it. He rarely missed his daily coffee with friends. Many children spent time at the roller skating rink that he helped run at the auditorium in Onida. He loved riding his motorcycle and attended the Sturgis Bike Rally every year. Wayne helped start and head up the Sully Trailblazers Snowmobile Club.

A great deal of his time and effort went towards the construction of the Chapel at the Agar Cemetery. He also donated much of his time with the upkeep of the cemetery. Wayne also enjoyed the many visits he received from friends, family, but most of all, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 


He is survived by his wife Mary of Onida; children, Curtis (Diane) Rawstern of Selby, Dianne (Dale) Boschee of Aberdeen, Annette (Ric) Severson of Pierre, Jeff (Susan) Rawstern of Blunt, Karen (Rick) LaFurge of Onida and Terry (Ricki) Rawstern of Lakeville, Minn.; 14 children and nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Eldon Rawstern of Miller and Leo Rawstern of Rapid City; sister BennaBee (Kenneth) Stewart of Miller; brothers-in-law Dick Zebroski of Pierre and Bob (Betha) Zebroski of Lochbuie, Colo., sisters-in-law Barb Rilling of Onida, Marje Zebroski of Watertown, Carol Heintz of Highmore and Bev Zebroski of Onida. 


Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, Clara and Irwin Rawstern; sisters-in-law, Shirley and Madeline Zebroski and JoAnne Rawstern; and brothers-in-laws, Jim, Ray, Jerry, Phil and John Zebroski and Maynard Rilling.
