The Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds hosted the Aberdeen Christian Knights on Saturday, February 9, for a girls’ varsity and boys varsity games. This was an abbreviated schedule due to the weather forecast. The JV games were cancelled and the games were played earlier in the afternoon.
The Lady Warbirds picked up a victory as they handed the Lady Knights a 49-16 loss. The Warbirds held the Knights to just nine points in the first half and kept that pace going to secure the win.
Brittany Bergquist and Bailey Zerfoss were in double figures with 16 and 11 points respectively. Meagan Eggleston put in eight; Sidney Carey had five; Cydnee Davis and Lexi McGillvrey both had three; Ashley Eggleston was good for two and Cortney Wuestewald had one. Sidney Carey and Meagan Eggleston both had five rebounds and McGillvrey was credited with four assists.
Zerfoss led the steal column with four. The Warbirds defeated the Christian Knights, 67-51, again with the entire bench having floor time. The Knights stayed close in the first half with some timely 3-point shooting, but the Warbirds still took a 36-29 lead into the second half. The third quarter tipped the scales as the "Warbird pressure defense" kicked in, and held the Knights to just six points in the third quarter while the Warbirds put in 14 to take a 50-35 lead going into the final round. With a lead of 20 in the final minutes the bench took over for the rest of the contest.
There were four Warbirds in double figures. Ryan Sprecher led the scoring with 16 counters. Hayden Hooks and Lorenzo Williams both put in 15 and Roy Lumpkin had ten. Alex Babcock followed with nine and Ryne Johnson got two in the win. Hooks, Sprecher and Babcock all had seven rebounds apiece. Hooks led the assist column with eight. Williams was also credited with two blocked shots.
