Warbirds bring home victories over Northwestern

The Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds traveled to Northwestern on Tuesday, January 29, and defeated the Wildcats, 93-63 in non-conference action.

The Warbirds played their full-court offense while forcing many Wildcat turnovers to take a 18-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. That pace continued throughout the game as the Wildcats couldn't find a way to stop them, and the Warbirds were all over, everywhere, putting in the points and grabbing the rebounds.

Lorenzo Williams led the balanced scoring with 20 counters. Hayden Hooks put in 19; Ryan Sprecher had 17 and Roy Lumpkin finished with 15. Ryne Johnson got 7 in the win while Alex Babcock had five; Chris Williams, 4; and Andrew McKown, Cole McGehee and Hunter Johnson, all with two. Lorenzo Williams and Lumpkin each pulled down six rebounds and Sprecher had 5. Steals again were numerous with the Warbirds getting 28 while forcing 35 turnovers on the Wildcats. Hooks led the assist column with eleven.

The JV team managed to pull out a 33-27 win. It was a see-saw battle with the Wildcats up at the half, 14-11 and then the Warbirds leading 26-23 going into the final stanza. Carter Langbehn put in nine; Hunter Johnson, 7; Brady Struck got 6; Cole McGehee, 4; Ryne Johnson, 3; and Jevin Scott and Andrew McKown, both with two. Langbehn led the assist column with seven and also was credited with seven steals.

The 7th & 8th grade team played an outstanding game as they defeated the Wildcats 46-17. They held the Wildcats scoreless in the first quarter and to only six at the half. Darian Ogunjemilusi and Dylan Hine led the scoring with both notching 14 counters. Austin Kemnitz put in eight; Tyler Babcock got six and Carter Mehling and Zane Wuestewald both had two. Hine pulled down six boards and Babcock had five. Kemnitz led the assist column with five and Babcock had three. Hine was credited with four steals and Babcock had three.

The 7th & 8th grade team also played a game with Faulkton the same night, winning 27-22. No stats were available for that game.
