The Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds advanced to the championship game of the 281 Conference Basketball Tournament on Thursday, January 17, when they defeated the Hitchcock-Tulare Patriots, 77-53 on Tuesday, January 15, at the Huron Arena.
The score was close at the end of the first quarter, 14-10, with the Warbirds on top. They got their offense going and scored 15 points in the second stanza while holding the Patriots to only five to take a 29-15 lead into the locker room. That pace continued into the second half.
Roy Lumpkin tallied eight of his eighteen game points, in the third quarter and Alex Babcock scored nine of his 18 game points in that quarter, also, to help the Warbirds to a 55-29 lead going into the final round.
The Patriots were running low on gas as the game was winding down, fouling to get the ball, and sending the Warbirds to the free-throw line where they made eight. The reserves took the floor with less than two minutes in the contest and secured the 77-53 win and a berth in the championship game.
Hayden Hooks and Lorenzo Williams were also in double figures with 15 and 13 points respectively. Chris Williams added six; Ryne Johnson had four and Ryan Sprecher got three. Babcock and Sprecher each pulled down nine boards and Lorenzo Williams had seven. Hooks led the steal column with five and Sprecher got four.
