Voting opened Nov. 5, 2012 for the 2012 Farm Service Agency County Committee elections and producers are encouraged to turn in their ballots before the December deadline. Ballots for this year’s County Committee election were mailed by November 5, 2012. Voters must complete their ballots and return them to the Farm Service Agency county office by the close of business on December 3, 2012. If mailed, the ballots must be postmarked by midnight December 3, 2012.
County committee members provide a link between the agricultural community and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. They help deliver farm programs at the local level and make decisions on commodity price support loans and payments, conservation programs, emergency programs and payment eligibility, and other FSA programs.
If you are a local farmer, rancher or agricultural producer, the U.S. Department of Agriculture encourages you to vote and make a difference. Anyone who participates or cooperates in a local FSA program, is of legal voting age, and meets eligible voter criteria can vote. Eligible producers who do not receive ballots by mail should contact their local USDA Service Center. Discrimination Prohibited – No person shall be denied the right to vote because of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation or marital or family status.
Hand County has three Local Administrative Areas (LAA). Every third year each LAA must elect a committee person to represent their area for a three-year term. In 2012, the election will be held in LAA #2. This area includes the townships of Holden, Burdette, Riverside, Greenleaf, Alpha, York, Gilbert, Ree Heights, Midland, Miller, St. Lawrence and Grand.
An eligible nominating petition has been received nominating Carol Grey for the opening on the County Committee. Carol and her husband Kelvin operate a diversified farming operation in LAA #2. She has served for 2 three year terms on the Hand County Committee. Prior to that, Carol served as the County Committee Advisor, representing the female operators in our county.
