Vince Lumby, 81, of Ree Heights, S.D., died Thursday, March 7, 2013 at the Avera Oahe Manor in Gettysburg

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Friday, March 15, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Miller. Burial will follow at Morningside Cemetery in Ree Heights with military honors. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, March 14, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, all at Reck Funeral Home, Miller.

Vincent Edward Lumby was born December 8, 1931 at Sanburn, Iowa, to Henry and Lydia (Walton) Lumby. Upon graduation, he lived in California for a short while and then moved to Wessington, S.D. Vince joined the Army in 1953 and was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. After serving in the Korean War, he returned to the Miller/Ree Heights area.

Vince married Loranda Melhoff of Miller on February 26, 1953. To this union three children were born. He worked for Tri-State Insulation for many years, as well as TCI. After retirement, he moved to Ree Heights, where he continued to help area farmers doing odd jobs, as he loved to be outdoors and keeping busy. It was there that Vince bought his little dog, “Duke,” who went with him everywhere. His hobbies included horseback riding, playing the guitar and singing and hunting. His band, The Driftwood Buckaroos, was well known around the area and they played for many dances.

Vince had an outgoing personality and was well liked and a friend to everyone. He was ready to tell a joke all the time and could strike up a conversation with anyone. His grandchildren spent a lot of time with him growing up as well and he cherished those memories and loved to tell stories of when they were young. He also had three great-grandchildren who he enjoyed tremendously. When his health started failing, he entered Avera Oahe Manor in Gettysburg where he remained until death.

Vince is survived by wife Loranda; his children, Gloria (Ray) Heuer of Pierre, Linda (Ed) Welch of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Gene (Freda) Lumby of Pierre; grandchildren, Chris (Mandy) Koening, Nikki Koening, Cassi Heuer, Katie Heuer, Matt (Brittany) Welch, and Shon (April) LeBeau; three great-grandchildren, Ryder Koenig, Tyson Shangreaux, Eli LeBeau, and one baby Welch on the way; his beloved little dog, Duke; and many nieces and nephews.

Vince was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters and two brothers.

He will be greatly missed, loved dearly and kept in our hearts forever.
