Two-vehicle crash claims life

Peter Werdel, 90, of Ree Heights, died as a result of a two-vehicle crash 15 miles south of Miller on Thursday, April 25 at 2:38 p.m.

According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, Werdel was driving a 2009 Buick Regal east on 215th Street, 15 miles south of Miller.

He failed to stop at the stop sign and pulled onto SD Highway 45, where his vehicle was struck by a southbound 2009 Ford F-150 driven by Timothy Hofer, 45,

of Faulkton. Sheri Hofer, 43, of Faulkton was also in the Ford.

Mrs. Hofer was wearing a seat belt and received minor injuries. Both men were wearing seatbelts, but sustained injuries and were transported by ambulance to Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital. Werdel received fatal injuries in the crash.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. The Hand County Sherriff’s Office and Hand County Fire and Rescue assisted.
