The boys’ basketball matchup between the Miller Rustlers (1-2) and the Winner Warriors (1-1) on Friday, Dec. 20 yielded split results. The Warriors took the JV game with a 38-27 victory but the varsity Rustlers earned their first season victory 69-64.

The JV Rustlers tried but couldn’t steal a win in their Friday night matchup vs the Winner Warriors. They trailed after each quarter with the margin varying between three and five points. Going into the last quarter, the Miller Rustlers trailed 21-26. They needed a strong performance in the fourth but didn’t quite measure up. The Warriors finished as well as they had started, when they secured a 38-29 victory. Freshman Cory Breland played well for the Rustlers with eight points and five rebounds, which was a chart topper in both categories. Winner’s victory was aided by Cameron Kuil, who had 12 points, and Windsor Barry, who had six points. They were Friday night’s top scoring Warriors in the junior varsity game.

The varsity boys got what had eluded them despite their efforts during this season to date. After finishing the first quarter even at 12-12, the Rustlers were able to dictate the pace for each of the following three quarters. The varsity Rustlers earned their first victory of the season ending the game at 69-64 and it was a well-rounded effort, with the post-game stats showing an even distribution. Beau Keeter and Haydn Herman topped the scoring charts with 17 points each. Cody Breland and Mason Chapin also had eight scoring points. The Rustlers had an overall shooting percentage of 53 percent, with 47 percent from the 3-point-line, which aided in their victory. They also snagged 26 total rebounds, in which Beau Keeter had six, the most for any Rustler in that category. Nathan Galbraith from the Winner Warriors scored 24 of the team’s 64 points in their losing effort.

The Miller Rustler varsity basketball team hopes to build steam after this win during their next matchups at the Parkston Classic on December 30, at DeSmet on January 4, and Mobridge/Pollock on January 10. The next home game will be vs Redfield/Doland on January 14.
