Ruth Grabin 1916-2012
Ruth Grabin, 95, of Woonsocket, S.D., and formerly of Gann Valley, died Saturday, July 21, 2012, at the Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket. Her funeral service was held Friday, July 27 at the Foothills Bible Fellowship Church in Wessington Springs with Pastor Don Grubb officiating. Burial was in the Prospect Hill Cemetery.
Ruth Evelyn Winchester was born December 9, 1916, in Hurley, S.D. �to William and Mabel Winchester.
Before she married Rex Grabin, Ruth worked as a housekeeper. In 1946, Rex and Ruth purchased a farm in Hand County where they lived until 2001. They moved to Wessington Springs and resided there until 2006. On January 26, 2006, Ruth became a resident of Prairie View Care Center, Woonsocket, where she lived until her death.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She sewed matching outfits for her and her two daughters. She liked to cook and garden and always had a big vegetable garden from which she canned goodies for the winter season.
She belonged to the Buffalo Gals Sewing Circle, Lady Helpers at the Congregational Church in Gann Valley, and was in the Live Nativity at Gann Valley during the Christmas season.
She helped Rex with farming, and she worked with him painting buildings for neighbors. She also worked in the greenhouse in Miller, S.D. During the winter months, she enjoyed playing cards at neighborhood card parties. Ruth and Rex also enjoyed deer hunting and snowmobiling in the Black Hills. In May to October, 1975, Ruth and Rex were privileged to take a trip to Alaska, where they worked for a man who had a flying service.
She is survived by her children, a son, Eugene (Carol); daughter-in-law, Elaine; a son, Lyle (Gail); a daughter, Vicki (Alex); and a daughter, Arlette; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Bill and Arlis.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of nearly 65 years, Rexford Grabin; a son, Gary; a son, Ronny; and a grandson, Jeffrey. Her only sister died at 12 years of age.
