The Miller Rustler volleyball team won a thrilling five set match by scores of 25-19, 25-13, 25-18, 12-25 and 15-12 against the Chamberlain Cubs in the District 12A championship match on Thursday night, Nov. 1, in Stephan.
The Rustlers started the match on fire, scoring the first eight points of the first game, then held on to a lead holding off the charge by the Cubs. The key in the match was starting strong, and in the second set the Cubs started out strong early and never looked back, as the Rustlers were never able to find a rhythm. The third game was the time for the Rustlers, and the Cubs dominated the fourth game, as the Rustlers never really got started in the game. They never gave up as they fell behind early in the fifth set, but clawed their way back taking the lead late in the set and taking the game on a string of serves.
The Rustlers were led from the service line by Jamie Mentzer, who scored 14 points on 20-21 with six aces. Emma Steers was 14-17, scoring 11 points with two aces. Kristen Peterka was 15-15 for 10 points. Jansen Hunter added four points with four aces on 10-11 serves.
Mentzer and Hunter led the balanced Rustler attack with 10 kills each. Peterka and Steers added nine and eight kills respectively. Denae Schlechter led the way with 37 assists on attacks for the Rustlers.
Hunter led the way defensively at the net, with three blocks for the Rustlers. Mentzer, Steers and Peterka added a block each for the Rustlers defensively. Mentzer also led the way defensively from the back row with 24 digs. Peterka added 22 digs for the Rustlers with Steers and Hunter adding 19 and 12 digs respectively for the Rustlers.
