Rustlers split with Wildcats

The Miller Rustlers took on the Northwestern Wildcats in Mellette in doubleheader basketball action January 12, bringing home the split with the boys bringing home a victory by a score of 67-54, while the girls suffered a 68-58 defeat.

In the girls’ contest the Rustlers started out strong leading after the first quarter 17-12. The Wildcats fought back in the second quarter to lead 30-26 at halftime. The Wildcats extended their lead in the third quarter to six at 48-42. In the fourth quarter the Wildcats cemented their victory 68-58.

Jamie Mentzer led the Rustlers with 18 points. Jansen Hunter added 13 points, with Denae Schlechter adding 12 points. DJ Alverson added six points.

Leading the way for the Wildcats was Ashley Clemens with 24 points. Kimberly Miles added 15 points.

The boys’ contest went the way of the Rustlers by a score of 67-54. The Rustlers gained a slight lead in the first quarter 14-12. At halftime the Rustlers extended their lead to 34-22 in the third quarter, the Rustlers extended their lead further to 56-32. In the fourth quarter the Wildcats fought to within 13 at 67-54.

The Rustlers were led by Lee Sivertsen with 18 points. Drew Beilke added 13 points and four steals. Beau Keeter netted 11 points for the Rustlers, and five rebounds. Haydn Herman added 10 points and five rebounds. Kris Wharton added eight points, two assists, two rebounds and two steals. Preston Blackwell added five points and a team high 12 rebounds for the Rustlers. Brendan Letsche added two points and four steals, two rebounds and one assist. The Wildcats were led by Dylan Miles and Nate Palmer with 21 and 13 points respectively.
