Rustlers split double header with Bulldogs

The Miller Rustlers hosted the De Smet Bulldogs in a boys’ and girls’ basketball double header Friday, Dec. 21, earning the split with the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs were overpowering in the girls’ contest, and captured the win by a score of 70-42. The Bulldogs opened the game with a lead at the end of the first quarter of 13-8. The Bulldogs were able to extend their lead at every quarter break. They led 39-15 at halftime with a 26-point outburst in the second quarter. At the end of the third quarter, the Bulldogs lead extended to a score of 60-26. The Rustlers closed the gap in the fourth quarter with a 16-10 advantage in the quarter, but the lead was just too big for the Rustlers to overcome, and they fell by 28 points.

Jamie Mentzer led the Rustlers, with 15 points and eight rebounds. Jansen Hunter added eight points and grabbed six rebounds. Kristen Peterka also netted eight points for the Rustlers. Denae Schlechter netted seven points, with DJ Alverson adding four points. Annie Fulton grabbed four points for the Rustlers.

The Bulldogs were led by three players scoring in double figures. Rylie Osthus led the Bulldogs with 14 points; Amanda Poppen netted 13 points and Taylor Schoenfelder added 11 points.

The junior varsity contest also went the way of the Bulldogs by a score of 37-9.

The Rustlers fared better in the boys’ contests. The Rustler junior varsity captured the victory by a score of 37-33. The varsity contest went the way of the Rustlers with a score of 66-57.

The Rustlers started slow, falling behind at the end of the first quarter by a score of 20-15. The Rustlers clawed their way in the second quarter to lead at halftime by a score of 32-27. The Rustlers were able to hold the lead heading into the fourth quarter 48-47. The Rustlers’ defense held strong in the fourth quarter to take the victory by a score of 66-57.

Beau Keeter and Preston Blackwell led the Rustlers, with each netting 16 points. Drew Beilke netted 15 points for the Rustlers, and Lee Sivertsen rounded out the double figures, netting 11 points. Haydn Herman added four points with Brendan Letsche and Mason Chapin netting two points each for the Rustlers. Blackwell led the Rustlers with five rebounds with Herman and Keeter pulling down four rebounds.
