Rustlers’ quest for tourney bid falls a game short

The Miller Rustlers boys’ basketball team had its quest for the State Tournament fall one game short, as they were defeated by the Mobridge-Pollock Tigers in the region championship game by a score of 55-44 in Pierre on Monday, March 4.

The Tigers opened the game, outscoring the Rustlers by a score of 14-9 in the first quarter. The Rustlers bounced back in the second quarter outscoring the Tigers 16-9 to take the 25-23 lead in to the locker at halftime.

The Rustlers extended the lead to six points at 36-30 after the third quarter.

The Tigers turned up the defensive pressure in the fourth quarter, allowing just nine points while scoring 25 points to end the game victorious by a score of 55-45.

The Tigers’ defense proved strong as the Rustlers shot 31 percent from the field (15-49) and just 19 percent from behind the arc. The Rustlers were able to shoot 13-17 for 76 percent from the free throw line.

The Tigers also forced the Rustlers into 20 turnovers including forcing 12 steals. The Rustlers forced the Tigers into 14 turnovers including nine steals.

Senior Lee Sivertsen led the Rustlers, scoring 20 points and grabbing seven rebounds and three steals in his final high school game. Drew Beilke also finished his high school career, scoring four points, grabbing a rebound and dishing out an assist. Beau Keeter netted 11 points along with grabbing eight rebounds and two steals. Haydn Herman netted five points along with grabbing five rebounds.

The Tigers were led by Daniel Roberts, who scored 18 points and eight rebounds. Mitch Heumiller netted 12 points and dished out four assists.

The Rustlers’ season ends with a record of 16 wins and five losses.
