Rustlers earn split with Tigers in double-header

The Miller Rustlers boys’ and girls’ teams hosted the Mobridge Tigers in double-header basketball action on Friday night, Jan. 4.

The Lady Rustlers (2-2) were able to pull out the victory by a score of 48-36 over the Lady Tigers (0-8). The Rustlers came out firing on all cylinders in the first quarter to take the early lead of 12-2 to end the first quarter. However, the Tigers came storming back with a 14-point second quarter while holding the Rustlers to just six points in the quarter. The Rustlers held the slim two-point lead heading into halftime at 18-16. The second half fared much better for the Rustlers, as they were able to extend their lead to 29-25 at the end of the third period and an offensive outburst in the fourth quarter cemented the 12-point 48-36 victory.

The Rustlers were led by a double-double from Jamie Mentzer with 31 points and 10 rebounds. Kristen Peterka added seven points and three assists. Jansen Hunter netted five points and also pulled down seven rebounds for the Rustlers. DJ Alverson added three points and seven rebounds coming off the bench, with Denae Schlechter adding two points for the Rustlers. The Rustlers proved stout on defense, recording 20 steals and forcing the Tigers into 29 turnovers, while committing 17 turnovers themselves.

In the nightcap, the Rustlers (2-2) were unable to match the stout offensive production of the Tigers, falling by a final score of 67-48. The Rustlers were able to hang close early on trailing by only three after the first period of play 15-12, but the Tigers took control in the second quarter with a dominant 22-8 advantage to lead at halftime 37-20. The third period saw the lead grow to 24 for the Tigers at 53-29. The Rustlers tried to claw their way back into the game but the lead was too much to overcome as they fell 67-48. The Rustlers were led by Lee Sivertsen with 10 points, three rebounds one assist and one steal. Preston Blackwell added eight points with a team leading seven rebounds adding an assist and a steal. Drew Beilke added six points, two rebounds and an assist. Haydn Herman netted four points while grabbing two rebounds. Kris Wharton rounded out the starting lineup with two points a rebound and a steal. Beau Keeter led the bench with eight points and three rebounds. Mason Chapin added six points and one assist off the bench. Brendan Letsche and Cody Naber each added two points.

The JV teams each split as well, with the Rustlers suffering the defeat in the girls’ contest by a score of 24-20. The Rustlers’ JV boys were victorious by a final of 38-28.
