The Miller Rustler boys (2-1) defeated the McCook Central-Montrose Cougars by a final score of 38-34 in the Parkston Classic in Parkston on Saturday, Dec. 29. The Rustlers fell behind early 14-8 in the first quarter, but behind strong defense were able to hold the Cougars to just five points in the second quarter and pull even at 19-19 going into halftime. The second half was also closely contested, with the Cougars outscoring the Rustlers by two, 9-7, in the third quarter to take the 28-26 lead into the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter was better for the Rustlers as they outscored the Cougars 12-6 to take the four-point victory 38-34.
The Rustlers were led by two players in double figures scoring with Drew Beilke and Lee Sivertsen each netting 11 points. Preston Blackwell scored seven points, with Beau Keeter scoring six points off of the bench. Haydn Herman added three points for the Rustlers. The Rustlers were strong on the boards, pulling down 29 rebounds as a team with Herman leading the way grabbing seven rebounds. Sivertsen and Blackwell were each able to secure six rebounds for the Rustlers. Keeter and Beilke each grabbed four and three rebounds respectively for the Rustlers, with Kris Wharton and Brendan Letsche grabbing two and one rebound respectively. The Rustlers were 13-21 from the free throw stripe, with Beilke leading the way sinking 9-10 from the line. Sivertsen was 2-5 from the line for the Rustlers. Blackwell and Herman were each 1-2 from the line with Keeter going 0-2 from the charity stripe.
