Rustlers advance to Regions

The Miller Rustlers boys’ basketball team continued their quest to earn a berth in the State Basketball Tournament with a dramatic last-second victory over the Chamberlain Cubs by a score of 50-48 on Thursday, Feb. 28 at Stephan.

The Cubs came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, hitting four three pointers, three of which were made by Reuben Estes. The Cubs led the Rustlers by a score of 15-10 after the first quarter. The Cubs three-point barrage continued in the second quarter, as Skyler Bertram was able to connect on two three pointers, with Gage Bastings connecting on one of his own. The Cubs extended their lead to nine at 28-19 heading to halftime.

In the third quarter the Rustlers were able to make the defensive adjustment to limit the Cubs to just one three-pointer and eight points, while scoring 12 points, cutting the Cubs’ lead to just five points at 36-31 heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter the Rustlers were able to catch the Cubs nearly halfway through the quarter, but neither team was able to pull away down the stretch.

With just under 15 seconds left in the game and the score tied, the Rustlers gained possession and Coach Waldrop called timeout to draw up a play for the final shot. After the timeout, the Rustlers were able to inbound the basketball and with just under five seconds left, the Rustlers were able to get the ball to Lee Sivertsen, who put the shot up and in as time expired, making the final score 50-48 and sending the Rustlers to the Region Championship game.

The Rustlers shot just 36 percent (20-55) for the game, including two for 10 from the three-point line. The Rustlers were able to hit 8-14 from the free throw line while committing just 12 turnovers. The Rustlers were able to secure four steals from the Cubs. No team statistics were available for the Cubs.

Sivertsen led the Rustlers, scoring 17 points including the game winner. Preston Blackwell and Beau Keeter were each able to post double-doubles scoring 10 points each with Blackwell grabbing 11 rebounds and Keeter grabbing 10. Haydn Herman scored eight points while grabbing eight rebounds for the Rustlers, with Drew Beilke adding five points in the win.

The Cubs were led by a game-high 23 points, including six three pointers by Bertram. Estes added 15 points including four three pointers. Gage Bastings and Lane Shroyer each added five points for the Cubs in the losing effort.
