Running the good race… for beef

Chris Howard, Miller, is one of 70 running enthusiasts who has been selected to be a member of the South Dakota Beef Council’s Team BEEF. He was notified March 22 that he is now a member of the team.

Team BEEF’s efforts are to promote the consumption of lean beef, and the fact that lean beef is used as part of the training diet for those who are runners, and the benefits of running.

Chris says his wife Amy stimulated his interest in running, and she is the one who urged him to apply for Team BEEF.

“We saw some Team BEEF runners at a race last year in Huron,” Amy relates. It planted the seed that being a running team member might be fun.

The SD Beef Council has four sponsored running events, and team members are encouraged to participate in at least two of them.

The first event will be the Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon and Half Marathon on June 2. Chris and Amy are planning to participate in that.

Other events include the Beef and Eggs Road Race in Brookings on July 13; Andy’s Road Race in Huron; and the Sioux Falls Marathon and Half Marathon, to be held September 8.

As advocates for lean beef, the team members will wear a Team BEEF running jersey at the races. They are expected to serve as positive role models for lean beef, and spread the word and help educate people about the benefits of lean beef.

Because the Howards already enjoy running, the Team BEEF designation is a good fit. They already recognize the nutrition benefits of lean beef. Combined with a good run, it’s a win-win situation.
