The Miller Rustlers’ Volleyball Team competed in the BDC Conference tournament on Saturday, Sept. 21, winning two while suffering one loss in the championship match against Winner. Making the BDC all-tourney team was Kristen Peterka and Jamie Mentzer.
Match 1 Miller 2 (25-10,25-7) McLaughlin 0
The Rustler opened the tourney with a 2-0 win over the McLaughlin Midgets.
Miller recored a 100 percent serving record and was led by Jamie Mentzer who pounded down four aces going 16/16 with 13 points, while Denae Schlechter combated 15/15 with 11 points and 5 aces.
Attacks were led by Mentzer who put down eight kills with a 93 percent average, while Chistina Koeck added six kills and Kristen Peterka added seven kills.
The team passing was 11/14 with Mentzer and Peterka each with 100 percent and two and five digs respectively. Setter Denae Schlechter was 53/53 with 21 assists.
Defensive efforts at the net resulted in one team block.
Match 2 Miller 2 (25-17, 25-18) Mobridge 0
The Rustlers second match proved just as profitable when Miller easily controlled Mobridge.
Miller’s serving remained consistently strong at 90 percent, led by Kristen Peterka with 12/12 for 9 points, Macee Fanning with 5/5 for 4 points and one ace, while Mentzer went 12/14 with nine points and five aces.
Offensive net play was led by Peterka with 14 kills and Mentzer with seven of the team’s total 20. Schlechter put up 90 sets for 21 assist. The team passed for 91 percent with Peterka leading with 7/7.
Mentzer led the floor defense with 16 digs. Peterka saved 15, and Jenna Heilman and Fanning tied for third with 9 digs each.
Match 3 Miller 0 (26-28, 18-25) Winner 2
Miller literally met their match in the finals when they came up against Winner. The Rustlers fought hard the first match loosing 26-28 and still had some fight in them when they lost 18-25.
The girls knocked down 26 kills with Peterka putting down 13 kills with Mentzer adding 10.
The team served a respectable 95 percent with two aces. Mentzer and Koeck were 100 percent at the serving line with Schlechter notching 91 percent and seven points.
The team passed with 96 percent led by a three way tie with Peterka, Mentzer and Koeck.
Miller tallied two blocks with one each going to Peterka and Mentzer. Schlechter was credited 24 assists and 99 percent.
Mentzer led the team digs with 16 and Peterka with 13.
