NASS 2012 Census of Agriculture

Very soon, USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will be focused on encouraging all farmers and ranchers to respond to the 2012 Census of Agriculture. The Census of Ag is conducted only once every five years across our country’s farmland and agricultural communities. USDA, those involved in agriculture and many others use the results of the Census to make important policy and business decisions that impact people across our nation. The results of the Census show the strength and diversity of American Agriculture.

The Census is a complete count of all U.S. farms and ranches and the people who operate them. It looks at land use and ownership, operator characteristics, production practices, income, expenditures and other topics.

Results of the Census are used to serve farmers and their local communities today, and to help benefit the future generations of farmers tomorrow. Census data is very important to the Farm Service Agency. We refer to this data many times when preparing for administering various disaster and other programs. We also encourage the farmers in our county to participate in shaping agriculture’s future.

Census forms will be mailed out in late December and responses are due by February 4, 2013. Producers have the option to complete their forms online or by mail. After all, the Census is your voice, your future and your responsibility. If you need assistance, the Farm Service Agency would be more than happy to assist you.

2012 Crop loans – plan ahead

The deadlines for 2012 commodity loans are March 31, 2013 for small grains and May 31, 2013 for row crops. A commodity loan through FSA offers low interest and an opportunity for producers to store their grain for later marketing.

FSA would like to remind producers that if they want to complete a loan and receive the proceeds in this 2012 calendar year, they should plan ahead.

The loan making process can often take two days to complete. The national office has reminded us that payment processing cannot happen after December 26, so therefore, if you desire to receive your money this year, please start the process prior to that date.
