Each year, from September through November, the American Cancer Society has coordinated a statewide event called Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. A Walk is held in Pierre and several events are held across the state to raise funds for breast cancer research, programs and services and for public awareness during October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We have concluded the events for 2012 and are pleased to announce that a goal of $50,000.00 has been reached and will be surpassed.
The funds will help to develop new discoveries such as tamoxifen and deliver important public awareness messages on mammography and early detection. Programs to help with travel for treatment and the costs of gas and lodging are also supported through Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
This past fall, the Pierre Mayor, Laurie Gill, issued a challenge to all of the mayors in South Dakota to help raise funds and raise awareness. Ron Blachford, Mayor of Miller, took the challenge and led the way to raising $700.00. We are pleased with the support of Miller in this effort to raise awareness, town by town. We are excited to think that this effort will grow in other South Dakota communities and bring our entire state together in the fight against breast cancer.
Appreciation to Ron, Mary Johnson and Laura Smith for all of your efforts. To all of you who donated and otherwise helped to raise the funds, we are very proud of your support.
