SENIOR FFA OFFICERS look over the cash flow surveys that have been returned. Standing, l to r, Leanne Koeck, Caitlynd Krosch, Trent Steptoe and Johannes Gimbel. Seated, Dani Ellsworth, Sam Simons, Kirstyn Fiala and Kyle Clement.

Time is drawing near for Hand County residents to complete a cash flow survey, which can help determine when, where and how money is spent in the community.

Miller FFA advisor Mark Ketelhut’s ag business class members distributed survey forms to several individuals, and the forms are also available at the On Hand Development office. Persons can also go to the school Website ( and click on “Announcements,” which will lead you to the “Hand County Cash Flow Survey” link, where you can fill out the survey on-line.

As of November 2, 10 on-line surveys had been completed, and 35 hard copy surveys had been returned. “Our goal is to have at least 200 returned,” Ketelhut said. The survey period will run through Wednesday, Nov. 21. After Thanksgiving break, the students will compile the responses.

Results will be shared with members of On Hand Development Corporation, Miller City Council, Hand County Commissioners, and other civic and business groups. Ketelhut says results will be available to the public at the Farm & Home Show in January.

All answers are confidential, and you are not asked to give your name.

Several questions are posed, among them: what percentage of your disposable income goes to various purchases; what percentage of those purchases are in Hand County; reasons for spending locally or otherwise; how much cost influences purchases; gas/fuel purchases; groceries; foods/beverages; clothing; and several other questions regarding purchase habits.

Responders also can indicate positive aspects of the Hand County economy, limitations, and possible improvements you would like to see.

The ultimate objective, Ketelhut says, is to use the information gathered to improve the business environment in the county.

Hard copy surveys may be returned to any of the school offices, to Mark Ketelhut, or mailed to Miller FFA Chapter, Box 257, Miller, SD 57362.
