Charles Michael “Mike” Tracy, 65, of Rapid City, S.D., died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012, at home after a nine-month battle with lung cancer.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug 22 at the First United Methodist Church, Rapid City, with the Rev. Doug Diehl officiating.
Burial was at the Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis with military honors provided by VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota Army National Guard.
Mike was born December 4, 1946 to Charles and Harriet Tracy in Deadwood, S.D. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam War. Mike married his wife, Barbara, in 1981.
He worked in the construction and steel siding business for many years before becoming the owner of Hiway Hardware & Building Center in Hill City. Mike and Barbara “Bobbi” successfully operated the business for 20 years before retiring in 2007.
Mike was a member of the Hill City Lions Club, the Black Hills Flyfishers, South Dakota Snowmobile Association, and he enjoyed competing in league billiards. His passions were hunting, fishing, motorcycle riding, traveling, and fixing and repairing things. He was happiest when he was helping other people. Mike thoroughly enjoyed his quest for knowledge of new and unusual subjects.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his son Geoffry Tracy; three grandsons, all of Rapid City; sisters Jody Lebeda of Murdo, Diane Gibson of St. Lawrence, and Barbara Munoz of Brooklyn Park, Minn.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, David.
