Michael D. McMahon, age 63, of Huron, S.D., died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013 at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.
His funeral service was held Thursday, Sept. 19, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, Huron, with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens, including military honors by the Huron Veterans Council. Visit welterfuneralhome.com.
Michael Dennis McMahon was born December 27, 1949 in Miller, S.D., to Lloyd and Lauretta (Johnson) McMahon. He graduated from Miller High School in 1968. While in high school, Mike excelled in football, basketball and track.
He attended Black Hills State College on a football scholarship until he was drafted into the Army in 1972. While in the Army, Mike married Charlotte Dick on February 24, 1973 in Huron. For a time, the couple made their home in West Germany until Mike was transferred back to the States. Mike was Honorably Discharged from Ft. Carson, Colo. in 1975.
The couple moved back to Huron, where Mike worked for Jim Zell for a couple of years as a farm laborer. He then began his almost 30-year career working for Farm Bureau Insurance as a claim supervisor. He was most recently employed at Dow AgroScience Corn Research facility near Cavour.
He and Charlotte spent many summers traveling the country with their camper. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his many friends and family.
Mike is survived by his wife of 40 years, Charlotte McMahon of Huron; one son, Keegan (Brittany) McMahon of Huron; one daughter, Erin (Dan) McGaugh of Huron; two granddaughters, Reva and Natalee McGaugh; three siblings, LeeAnn (Hugh) Miner of Cavour, Patrick McMahon of Miller and Tim (Verna) McMahon of Miller; stepfather Duane Schaefers of Cavour; and several nieces and nephews.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Joseph McMahon.
