Mea culpa — my mistake

Since writing a story about a tragic accident in which a police officer died 50 years ago in Miller, the Press has received several responses that there were mistakes in the article.

For that, we are most sorry. We obtained most of the information for the article from the Miller Press at that time (May 23, 1963).

Additional information, and the part that was brought to our attention as incorrect, came from a law enforcement officer who requested an article be written.

We received his notes about the accident, which he had apparently gotten from a family member of the deceased.

We receive several reports from law enforcement agencies, and believe the reports are accurate, so therefore do not check further.

As noted, much of the information used is what was available from the Miller Press 50 years ago.

The information in question was provided by the officer, based on his contact with the deceased policeman‘s family member. I assumed it had been checked out; that was my mistake…never assume.

There was very little follow up in the Miller Press after the accident.

There is always more than one side to a story. We should have checked further, although we thought that had already been done before the information was given to the Press.
