Mary Alice Vaughn celebrates 80th birthday Miller Manor 11-28-12

Congratulations to Wilfred and Marge Faust on celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary November 17. In my estimation, that is quite an honor and a success story in itself. We not have two couples at the Manor who have accomplished 70 years of marriage. Bud and LaVonne Puffer celebrated their 70th anniversary in October.

Virginia Burgher was a guest for Thanksgiving dinner at the home of Todd and DeAnn Beckett, Lacey, Cassie and Karly. Fourteen people were present for dinner. Other guests were Bronc McMurtry, Kim Roth, Kristin Roth, Dustin Arthur, Charlene Beckett, Kodee Beckett, Donna Roth and Mary Haeffner. Following the meal, some watched football, while several others engaged in playing the card game “Phase 10.” A highlight for Virginia for the day was getting to hold and cuddle with Bella the cat. It was an enjoyable day for her.

Dorothy Stevens went to the farm to have Thanksgiving dinner with Ken and Kris Stevens. They also had several hunters for guests.

Early Thursday morning, Mary Alice Vaughn accompanied Dorothy and Marilyn Engelmann to Brookings for Thanksgiving festivities at the home of Chuck and Sue Engelmann. They returned home Friday.

Friday evening, Virginia Burgher had supper at a local restaurant with Patty Crackel, Sue Jones and Nancy Williams. The “girls’ night out” event was in honor of Patty’s birthday, which was Monday, Nov. 26.

Aaron Stevens and a friend of his from Watertown visited Dorothy Stevens on Saturday.

Saturday evening Virginia Burgher attended the 2013 Miller Snow Queen Festival with Mary and Abby Breitling. The theme of this year’s festival was “A Magical Season.” Virginia especially enjoyed the Little Miss Snowflakes and their escorts. Abby, along with Parker Kilker, were the emcees for that portion of the event. Many of the Little Miss Snowflakes and escorts were from Mrs. Bonnichsen’s kindergarten class last year, so Virginia knew them. They were so adorable in their pretty dresses and handsome outfits.

Rhoda Rombough had a granddaughter, Claudia Rombough, who was a candidate for the 2013 Junior Snow Queen. Claudia received first runner-up in the pageant. Laura Evans, Lurabel Evans’ great-granddauther, participated as a Little Miss Snowflake.

Virginia would like to extend congratulations and best wishes to Jonni Blake, the 2013 Miller Senior Snow Queen, and to Shae Knox, the 2013 Miller Junior Snow Queen. She hopes they do well at the state pageant in Aberdeen in January 2013, and that they have a great time, as well.

Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m., there was an open house in honor of Mary Alice Vaughn’s 80th birthday. It was held in the Manor community room. The event was hosted by Dorothy Engelmann and Marilyn, with Barb Bouren and Vicki Oligmueller assisting. They served cake, ice cream, nuts, candy, crackers and coffee. More than 55 people attended, including family members, residents from the Manor and many from the community. Happy birthday was sung, and Mary Alice received many cards and several gifts.

As part of the open house, there was musical entertainment in the Manor lobby. Musicians were Merlin Bennett, Pierre, who provided banjo and vocal music; Laura Engelmann, who performed violin and piano solos; and Marilyn Engelmann, who played piano music. Merlin is Barb Bouren’s son-in-law. Laura is Dorothy Engelmann’s granddaughter and Mary Alice’s niece.

We have two other November birthdays to note. Hazel Bouren’s birthday was November 25, and Edna Hochhalter’s was November 27. We hope both of you had a lovely birthday, and that the year ahead brings you much peace, joy, love and good health.
