Marjorie Holtey, 84, of rural Wessington, S.D., died Friday, March 15, 2013 at the Avera Weskota Memorial Hospital in Wessington Springs, S.D.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, March 21, at Reck Funeral Home, Miller, with Pastor Brian Jones presiding.
Marjorie Gladys was born August 2, 1928 to Nile William and Gladys Elenora (Anderson) Wright in Bexar County, San Antonio, Texas. Marjorie attended St. Joseph’s Elementary Catholic School in San Antonio and later went on to work with her mother, Gladys Wright in her various business interests.
She met Boyd Meeves Holtey while he was in the Air Force at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, and they were married March 10, 1953. When Boyd finished his term of enlistment in the military, they decided to move back to South Dakota so Boyd could resume the ranch operations with his father and mother, Herb and Bessie Holtey.
Marjorie was an avid horse woman who loved to ride her Quarter horses. She and her husband Boyd raised Quarter horses and were very active in the American Quarter Horse Association for many years. Marjorie loved to garden, tending to her flowers every summer. She could make anything grow. She never passed up an opportunity to go fishing with her family. When not enjoying the outdoors, she was pursuing her passion of ceramics. She taught ceramic classes at her home for many years. Marjorie valued her family and always looked forward to those holidays when all of her family could be together.
Marjorie had a “spunky” personality and people always knew what she was thinking. Susie (her poodle) was her constant companion, and with her at all times during the last nine years. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her children, Thomas (Emily) Holtey of Wessington Springs, Russell (Susan) Holtey of Aberdeen and Linda (Don) Holtey-Hanks of Wessington; eight grandchildren, Laura (Peter) Holtey-Edeburn of Bloomington, Minn., Nick Holtey of Missoula, Mont., Kori Holtey-Fowlds of Aberdeen, Jeremy Holtey of Aberdeen, Michelle Holtey of Galveston, Texas, Jami (Josh) Hanks-Walth of New Ulm, Minn., Amber (Spencer) Hanks-Allen of St. Peter, Minn., and Katie Lynn Hanks of Mankato, Minn.; and many great-grandchildren.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her father and mother; Nile William and Gladys Elenora (Anderson) Wright; and husband, Boyd Meeves Holtey.
Memorials are to be directed to the Beadle County Humane Society, 5063 Dakota Avenue South, Huron, SD 57350.
