LeRoy Delmar Nye was born October 5, 1931 at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Pierre, S.D. He was one of three boys born to Clayton and Pearl Nye. He was raised on the family ranch west of Canning, S.D. LeRoy started school in Canning until the school closed, which lead to his graduation from Blunt High School.
After graduation, LeRoy worked for Karl Graf and met his bride-to-be, Gladys Melvin. They were wed on October 5, 1952. Later they worked for Erv Korkow, where he got involved with rodeos and horses. When he wasn’t working for someone else, he spent every available hour on the family ranch. Continuing to work hand in hand with his father, LeRoy took the role as the fourth generation to work on the ranch. At this time, LeRoy started to pursue his passion as a cattleman and started his own herd.
On the ranch together they were blessed with five children, Alan, Leann, Thomas, Lori Ann, and Donnie. If raising a family and ranching wasn’t enough, LeRoy kept busy with 4-H boards, Canning School Board, and the Hughes County Fair Board.
After 50 years of ranching, LeRoy decided to hang up his spurs due to his health. Retiring to Pierre, S.D., he spent his last years happy at Lincoln Apartments and attending the United Methodist Church.
After 60 years of marriage, LeRoy, with his quiet faith in the Lord, went home in the best way that he knew possible to be with his Lord and Savior in Heaven on May 22, 2013 at the age of 81.
LeRoy is survived by his lovely bride, Gladys; three children, Leann Goff and husband Bill of Pierre, S.D.; Thomas Nye and wife Karen of Aurora, Colo.; Donnie Nye and wife Debbie of Saint Lawrence, S.D.; twin brother, LaVerne Nye and wife Rhea of Rapid City, S.D.; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Elden Nye; and two children, Alan Nye in 1981 and Lori Ann Nye at birth.
Memorials may be directed to Hand County Emergency Management Team for all their help and support.
