Legion Auxiliary makes plans for Memorial Day

The Gann Valley Memorial Day services will be held Monday, May 27. The Abernathy American Legion Post will be at the St. Placidus Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. A program will be held at the Gann Valley Legion Hall at 10:30 a.m. with Vivian Rearick as the speaker. Brian Bergeleen will provide music. The Legion Auxiliary will give a program on the Vietnam War Memorial. Following the program, the Legion Post will go to the Spring Hill Cemetery. A potluck dinner will be held at the Legion Hall at noon with the Auxiliary providing the tableware and drinks.

Gann Valley

A clean-up of the St. Placidus Cemetery will be held Thursday, May 23, starting at 8 a.m. Volunteers can come when they can.

Gene Grabin visited in the Patrick and Jennifer Cuka home near Sioux Falls Sunday to Tuesday afternoon. On Wednesday, Gene accompanied Gunnar’s school class on a field trip on the Big Sioux River near Garretson.

Evelyn Wulff accompanied Wes and Charity Wulff and family to Chamberlain for pizza to celebrate Taylor’s birthday.

Linda Ness attended the graduation party for Katie Lutter at her home Friday evening.

Thursday, Carol Grabin attended a quilt retreat at Sonia Schelske’s home, returning to Gann Valley Saturday afternoon.

Lucille Feenstra, Sioux Falls, visited in the Ellen Speck home over the weekend. They attended Tanner Cain’s reception at St. Lawrence on Saturday and enjoyed visiting with family.

Saturday, Linda Ness attended the high school graduation ceremony in Wessington Springs. Katie Lutter was one of the graduates. Congratulations, Katie!

David and Judy Gaulke took a carry-in supper to the Robin Knigge home in White Lake Tuesday evening. Marge Knigge and Butch Wait joined them.

George and Barb Sinkie and their grandson, Aiden, of Mitchell, visited with Juanita Sinkie on Saturday. Juanita accompanied them out to the ranch to do a few things.

Linda Ness visited with Albina Larter and her family at the White Lake Nursing home.

Legion Auxiliary

The Abernathy Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary met Monday, May 13, 2013, with six members present. President Juanita Sinkie called the meeting to order. The Flag Pledge was recited.

The End of Year reports were written by the Unit’s Project Chairmen and submitted to the Department Project Chairmen. Elaine Wulff and Janet Wulff were nominated as Delegate and Alternate to the Department Convention in Rapid City June 7-9, 2013. Janet Wulff was selected as District 6 Legionette of the Year at the DeSmet District meeting.

The treasurer’s report was given and a bill for posterboards for a Memorial Day presentation was approved. A discussion was held on exchanging July and August Auxiliary vacation months to the winter months. The matter was tabled until the June meeting. Greeting cards were sent to a couple of our members.

Reports from newspaper articles were given regarding flying the Confederate Flag at a VA Center, a WWII veteran recently receiving the Purple Heart, and a Civil War gun donated to the SD Historical Society.

The Memorial Day Program parts were read and discussed changes to be made. The Auxiliary Program will be centered on the Vietnam War Memorial (the Memorial Wall, the Three Soldiers Statue and the Vietnam Women’s Memorial) and Table of Remembrance.

Judy Gaulke will be the hostess for the June 10 meeting.

The Gann Valley area received around 1-1/2 inches of rain during the week with various reports from other areas. It has all been very welcome. We wish everyone safe travels during the Memorial Day weekend. Keep our military in your thoughts and prayers.
