JAMIE MENTZER goes in for the lay-up over two Potter County defenders in the Rustlers’ 55-52 victory in Miller Tuesday night.
The Miller Rustlers girls’ basketball team struggled in their first game, but were able to prevail over the Potter County Battlers in a tightly contested contest, 55-52 on December 4.
The Rustlers took the lead in the first quarter by a score of 10-9. The Rustlers extended their lead in the second quarter for a halftime score of 23-19. The Battlers stormed back in the third to take the lead, going into the final quarter by the score of 33-31. The Rustlers came back to take the win with 22 points in the fourth quarter against the Battlers’ 19.
The Rustlers shot only 38 percent from the field (18-48) and 51 percent from the free throw line (19-37) while their defense stayed strong holding the Battlers to 36 percent (20-56) and only 44 percent from the free throw line (12-27). The Rustlers struggled hanging on to the ball with 24 turnovers, while forcing the Battlers into 16 turnovers of their own.
The Rustlers won the rebound battle 40-36. Jansen Hunter and Annie Fulton led the Rustlers with nine rebounds each, with Kristen Peterka grabbing seven. Jamie Mentzer led the Rustlers offensively with 24 points and three assists, with Peterka netting 14 points. Jansen Hunter put down eight points. Denae Schlechter scored seven points with D.J Alverson adding two points for the Rustlers.
The Battlers were led offensively by Alli Lake with 17 points, with Morgan Vandervorst adding 10 points and two assists. Allysyn Breaw added eight points and nine rebounds.
In the junior varsity contest, the Rustlers fell by a score of 34-15. The Rustlers were led offensively by Kristi Steptoe with eight points. Annie Fulton contributed four points with Shae Knox scoring three points. The Rustlers were led on the boards by Rilea Mielke with four rebounds. Annie Fulton added three rebounds with Shae Knox contributing two rebounds.
The next action for the Rustlers will be December 15, when they take on Northwestern in Mellette.
