Katherine (Zilverberg) Buckner 1944-2013
Katherine (Zilverberg) Buckner, 68, of O’Neill, Neb., and formerly of Highmore, S.D., died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Neb.
A memorial service was held Thursday, Jan. 31, at the Harrold Auditorium in Harrold, S.D. Burial followed at the Highmore Cemetery. A second Memorial Service was held Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall in O’Neill, Neb.
Katherine Ann was born May 7, 1944 in Renton, Wash. to Harry and Grace Katherine (Stimson) Kirby. After her father’s death, Katherine, her mother Grace and brother Bill moved to Highmore to be closer to Grace’s family.
On December 3, 1949 Grace married Mac Zilverberg and Katherine was later adopted. While she was growing up, Katherine attended Valley Country School and graduated from Highmore High School. She married Melvin Carroll in August of 1965 and to this union three sons were born, Daniel, Donald and Duaine. She was a waitress at the Driftwood Café in Miller, S.D. before working on the farm south of Harrold for 23 years. From there she moved to Nebraska and worked as a certified medication aide at an assisted living facility.
Katherine loved to do gardening, canning and baking. She also loved to travel, quilt and sew. She made her own wedding gown and clothes for her sons. She was a faithful member of the Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall.
Grateful to have shared in her life are her children: Daniel (Lana) Carroll of Harrold, Donald Carroll of Harrold, and Duaine (Shelley) Carroll of Pierre; grandchildren, Cody Poppen, Stephen (Amber) Poppen, Julian (Falon) Sheared, Ramsey Sheared, Jade Sheared and Rider Sheared; great-granddaughter, Delilah Poppen; siblings Janet (Smokey) Kopecky of Orient, Mary Jo (Nicholas) Nemec of Holabird, and Shorty (Susan) Zilverberg of Highmore; sister-in-law: Jeanne Zilverberg of Huron; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews
Preceding her in death were her father, Harry Moyne Kirby; her parents, Mac and Katherine Zilverberg; brothers, Bill and Thomas; and her grandparents.
