Ilene Elizabeth Scovil, 92, of Vancouver, Wash. died November 29, 2012.
Services were held December 8, 2012 at the Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Vancouver Wash.
She was born December 20, 1919 to Claude and Bertha Phillips in Hand County, S.D., the third child of 16 children. Many cherished memories resulted from helping on the farm and caring for her younger siblings.
She graduated from St. Lawrence High School in 1937. Ilene married Irwin P. Scovil in 1939. Soon thereafter, due to drought and the Great Depression, they moved to the Portland-Vancouver area where they raised their family, and lived in the area for the remainder of their lives.
Ilene enjoyed employment as a “Rosie the Riveter” at the Vancouver Shipyards while her husband Irwin served during WWII. Hillsboro Birdseye Cannery, Rogue Valley Hospital and Sears were also organizations that enjoyed her dedication and leadership during various times of her life.
Ilene’s hobbies included painting, crocheting and reading, as well as preparing huge breakfasts for her grandchildren and other family members and friends. Her famous potato salad was served at all family gatherings.
Ilene was a lifelong church member, most recently attending New Heights Church. Her strong faith sustained her throughout her life.
Her greatest accomplishment and joy resulted from being a homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Ilene is survived by three of her four children, Marlene Krout (Jim), Ed Scovil (Sandy), and Kay Wanless (Jim); 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nine siblings; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Irwin; their youngest daughter, Sonya; and six siblings.
