Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital is in the final phase of the hospital renovation project.

The new hospital is completed and occupied (phase 1); the renovation of the west half of the old hospital was updated for outpatient areas, wellness and support areas is also occupied (phase 2); the renovation of the east half of the old hospital was updated for Vision Care and additional PT and Cardiac Rehab space is also now occupied (Phase 3).

Now is the time for Phase 4. This last phase consists of renovation of the front entrance, old Vision Care, hospital and clinic business offices, lobbies, public restrooms and generating good access to nursing service.

To accommodate this renovation, the front door will be closed, effective April 2 and will last until approximately June 1. During this time, both the inside renovation will be completed as will the outside parking lot changes. The outside will feature an expanded parking lot with much easier driving and parking access, as well as the ability to drop off and pick up patients under the canopy.

During this time when the front door is closed, the public will need to use any of four alternative entrances.

The primary interim entrance (noted with a 1 on the graphic) will be the north Assisted Living/East Clinic building entrance. This entrance will be used for all clinic, lab, x-ray, and hospital visitors. Both the hospital and clinic will have interim reception desks near this entrance to assist patients, customers, and visitors as needed.

This northeast entrance will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. For any visits after 7 p.m., please use the ER entrance.

Public parking will be made available in the first three rows of the east parking lot. Due to the distance from the parking areas to the entrance, there will also be valet services available to pick public/patients up at their vehicle and drop off at the entrance and vice versa.

The valet service is a volunteer service and the hospital is still looking for additional volunteers for this two-month interim period. If anyone is interested in volunteering to drive a golf cart for hospital/clinic valet services, call 853-2421 for more information.

The second interim access point (noted with a 2 on the graphic) will be the west entrance of the 1969 building. This access point will be used primarily for Vision Care patients, therapy and rehab patients, and Wellness Center users. This entrance will not have a reception area and will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The third access point is the west new ER entrance. This is a permanent entrance and will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., but will also have a call button to the nurses’ station in the vestibule 24 hours a day.

The fourth access point is Courtyard Villa Assisted Living. This access is also available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. A reminder that this entrance takes you into the living space of the Assisted Living residents, so use of this entrance is requested specifically for those visiting Assisted Living residents.

Appreciation to visitors and patients for bearing with us during this inconvenient and final stage of the hospital renovation project. Many staff have been relocated to interim or permanent locations in the past few months; please feel free to ask any staff member for directions when you need to meet or speak to a staff member of the campus. This period of interim access to the facility will be a challenge, but soon the entire construction will be complete.

Please call 853-2421 for any questions or to volunteer to drive the golf cart for valet services.

Visitors to Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital are urged to use a new, temporary entrances during the last phase of renovations. Access points are marked above in order of preference of use.
