Applications for enrollment are being accepted for the 2013-2014 program year. To qualify for enrollment, a child must be three or four years old by September 1, 2013. Since 90 percent of the families involved must have incomes that meet federal income guidelines, parents need to provide verification of income (W-2 forms, 1040 tax return, payroll stubs, etc.).
Head Start is a comprehensive program that provides educational, nutritional, health and social services for preschool children with income-qualifying families. The program also provides services for children with disabilities. It strengthens relationships within the family by encouraging parent involvement in all aspects of the program.
Children who attend Head Start participate in a variety of educational activities. They also receive medical and dental exams, have healthy meals and snacks, and enjoy playing indoors and outdoors in a safe setting.
The Northeast South Dakota Head Start Program, Inc. is funded to serve 392 children and their families in a 13-county area which includes Hand, Beadle, Faulk, Spink, Brown, Campbell, Day, Edmunds, Marshall, McPherson, Potter, Roberts and Walworth counties.
Two program options are offered in the 13-county area:
• Center-based Head Start provides experiences for preschool children in a classroom setting half a day, four days a week. Head Start centers are located in Aberdeen, Huron, Mobridge, Northwestern, Redfield, Sisseton, Webster and Wilmot.
• Home-based Head Start provides experiences for children in areas where it is not possible to transport children to a center. A Home Visitor goes into the home weekly and helps the parents provide a variety of learning experiences for their children. Group meetings are held twice a month to provide a socialization experience for the children in a classroom setting.
