Hand County Relay
For Life kicks off May 28
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life for Hand County will officially get underway on Tuesday, May 28. Volunteers and teams will gather at 5:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Miller for a kick-off rally to launch their fundraising efforts for the year. This will be the time to get a team registered, pick up team packets, luminaria forms and information about this year’s relay. Persons interested in forming a team and joining the Hand County Relay For Life should attend this meeting to get materials and information.
Relay brings together friends, families, the hospital, schools and church groups – people from all walks of life – all aimed at furthering the American Cancer Society’s vision of creating a world with less cancer and more birthdays. David and Janice Erfman, St. Lawrence, have benefitted from Patient Services with the American Cancer Society during David’s course of cancer treatment. During lengthy stays in Sioux Falls and Aberdeen, the American Cancer Society provided lodging for the Erfmans. Funds for the lodging program are provided by money raised at Relay For Life events. David has been cancer free for over two years. As a way of giving back to the community, Janice is involved with planning the 2013 Hand County Relay For Life.
Currently sponsorship letters have gone out to area businesses to help support the fight against cancer in Hand County by becoming sponsors of the Hand County Relay. Cancer touches everyone, and involvement in Relay For Life is a great way for local businesses to show their commitment to help ACS save lives through programs such as the lodging program and through research. Many options are available for sponsorship, such as forming a team, providing in kind donations for food, water or the silent auction, asking employees to volunteer and collecting donations. Contact either Janice Erfman or Kevin Hofer if you wish to make a donation.
The Hand County Relay For Life will be at Crystal Park in Miller on Sunday, Aug. 4 from 4-10 p.m. Included in the event will be a survivors’ lap and recognition of all area cancer survivors. Special music and entertainment and the luminaria ceremony will be part of the evening. Plans are also being made for a pork feed dinner. Volunteers who are interested in helping to plan this year’s Relay For Life can contact Janice Erfman at 853-2313.
