If you haven’t already enrolled in the Direct and Counter-cyclical Program (DCP), it’s not too late to sign up. The deadline to enroll in the program has been extended to September 16, 2013.

This has been and continues to be a challenging year for the FSA County Offices. Many of the performance issues associated with MIDAS, the new integrated software system have been resolved. However, many of the problems that arose during the implementation of MIDAS are still being worked on.

I often hear farmers tell of purchasing a new tractor or piece of equipment and how the GPS and precision farming capabilities have improved their overall production, but when the equipment malfunctions it can be hours and even days of crucial time that is lost.

With the implementation of MIDAS We lost many hours of crucial time this year, but are working diligently to wrap up the 2013 acreage reporting. We can honestly say that there is an end in sight and eventually the new MIDAS system will improve our overall productivity and efficiency.

There is a reason that God made a farmer and when I drive through the countryside I can’t help but feel grateful for our farmers and ranchers. I am reminded of how important the American farmer is in the world’s food and fuel production, and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve our area producers through natural disasters, market and price fluctuations, and in preserving the land, water, and wildlife habitat for future generations.

The corn appears to have the potential for a bumper crop this year and the beans seem to be coming along after a slow start. The abundance of hay and pasture has helped the livestock producers after the drought of last year. Once again, we have much to be thankful for.
