Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony to be December 21
The fourth annual induction ceremonies to the Miller High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame will be held Friday, Dec. 21 at the double-header basketball game with visiting DeSmet. The induction ceremony will be held between the varsity girls’ and varsity boys’ games, at approximately 7:30 p.m.
This year’s inductees include: Athletes – Mona Tarr Schultz, Bob Wilber, Bob Templeton, Jeff Wilber. Contributor/coach – Gerry Hunter. Team – 1949 undefeated State “B” Basketball Championship team.
The nominating committee consists of Charlie Sizer, Dr. Steve Schroeder, Gerry Hunter, Sandy Greenough and Bob Lager.

Gerry Hunter
Inducted 2012, Contributor/coach category
Throughout Gerry’s 41-year career (1968-2009) at the Miller School District, he taught science and driver education and was head coach in boys’ and girls’ track and cross country and boys’ basketball. He also assisted in football.
Twenty-five years (1984-2009) were spent as junior-senior high school principal and 11years (1973-1983) as Miller’s athletic director.
In 1990, Gerry was selected as South Dakota Athletic Director of the Year and in 2002, he was selected as Middle School Principal of the Year. That same year he was also given an Honorary Chapter FFA Degree.
Gerry was able to take two boys’ basketball teams to the state tourney, finishing third in 1975 and fourth in 1976. Several Miller athletes qualified for state track and field meets and state cross-country meets under his direction.
Gerry spent several years officiating boys’ and girls’ basketball, along with track meets. He officiated girls’ state tournaments in 1986 and 1990. He also assisted Miller athletics by officiating many lower-level athletic contests in football, boys’ and girls’ basketball, track and cross-country, and line judging in volleyball.
In 2002 he was awarded the Friends of Athletics Award in recognition for outstanding athletic support and service to Miller athletics

Coach Bob Schroeder’s Rustlers team closed an exceptionally successful season by winning the South Dakota State “B” Tournament in 1949. In addition to their State “B” Title, they also won District, Region and Central S.D. Conference Tournament Championships. The team played the game of basketball with a passion for winning. They utilized excellent ball handling, quick passing, accurate shooting and a tough defense for a winning combination.
