Elliot’s Halloween 5K Walk/Run will start and finish at Miller’s Crystal Park on Saturday, October 29. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the walk/run starts at 8 a.m.

Planners of the event, Laura Smith, Rachel Heezen, and Cindy Deuter, are encouraging all participants to wear a costume. Prizes will be awarded for the best adult costume and the best children’s costume.

Elliot was born on December 13, 2010, and weighed just 1 pound 12 ounces and was only 12 inches long. The little guy spent the first several months of his life in the NICU at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Since Elliot’s discharge from the NICU, he has undergone three surgeries, including two abdominal surgeries and a hip surgery. The family is currently waiting for a date for a second hip surgery.

In February, Elliot was diagnosed with an Atrial Septal Defect, which means he has a hole in his heart.Doctors are not sure if surgery will be required to close the hole.

According to his mom, Elliot also has hearing loss and will soon be traveling to Sioux Falls to start the process of gettinghim fitted for a hearing aid.

Elliot is a very happy and very active little boy, said Erin. Our biggest obstacle at this point is trying to keep weight on Elliot. He has lost a lot of weight with all of his surgeries. At ten months old, Elliot now weighs 11 pounds 4 ounces.

Everyone is urged to come out and participate in the 5K walk/run benefit. For more information, please call Laura at 204-0372, Rachel at 204-0803 or Cindy at 204-0741.
