The 2013 Apache Wells billiards 8-ball doubles tournament in Mesa, Ariz., was a grueling marathon. The games started at 8 a.m., and six hours and 22 games later, Charles Droz of Miller and his partner emerged the victors. There were 30 players (15 teams) who competed in the 8-ball finals.
The games featured the elite of the pool players. The majority of the shooters were of the same caliber as Miller’s very own South Dakota State Hall of Famer, Don Soper.
The final four players left standing were Charles Droz and his partner, and Marvin Diede and his partner. In an exciting and competitive championship game, with some unusual circumstances, Charles Droz and his partner were crowned champions. Congratulations to Charles Droz and the runner-up, Marvin Diede. The brothers-in-law did themselves proud.
Coincidentally, Lowell Droz also won the 2003 championship with the same partner that Charles had in 2013. Each Droz brother could say, “It sure helps to have a great partner when you are in a doubles tournament!”
