, 100, of Chamberlain, died Saturday, June 22, 2013 at Sanford Care Center in Chamberlain.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 27, at the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain with burial in the Riverview Cemetery at Chamberlain.
Doris I. Jensen was born May 4, 1913 to John and Ida (Graeff) Fulton on the farm near Trent, S.D. She was the third youngest of eight children. She attended school at Trent.
On June 3, 1931 Doris was united in marriage to Robert W. Jensen at Egan, S.D. They began their life together on a farm near Gann Valley, S.D., later moving to a farm near Hartford, S.D. To this union two sons, Maynard and Robert “Bob” were born. In 1960 the two boys moved west to Chamberlain, and as Doris said, “so we did also.” Doris worked 28 years as a waitress at the Chamberlain Livestock Café. Sale days were long and busy, but Doris served the last customer with a glowing smile and a witty comment.
Doris enjoyed cooking, baking, quilting and spending time with her granddaughters, great-grandchildren and her great-great-granddaughters. She shared her special recipe for sweet potatoes with her granddaughters. Doris made over 100 quilts in her life. She was still sewing those quilt pieces together on a treadle sewing machine making quilts into her late eighties.
On May 4, 2013 Doris celebrated her 100 birthday with her family and friends including her slightly younger sister Nellie (99 years of age) from Denver. She looked so forward to celebrating this very special milestone.
Grateful for sharing her life are her son, Maynard (Marcella) of Chamberlain; daughter-in-law, Joann Jensen of Sioux Falls; sister, Nellie Hougaard of Denver, Colo.; four granddaughters, Kae Peterson, Seattle, Wash., Kim (Clint) Vanneman, Ideal, S.D., Pam (Darwin) Ellis, Sioux Falls, and Brenda (Scott) Oligmueller, St. Lawrence, S.D.; 10 great grandchildren and two great-great-granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son Robert “Bob;” three brothers Lloyd, Ernie and Alden “Beanie;” and three sisters, Ethyl Feuerhelm, Enid Gleason and Phylis Johnson.
