Dessie Evelyn Price 1930-2013

Dessie Price, 82, of Miller, S.D., died Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, March 16, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Miller, with Father Chester Murtha, celebrant. Burial followed at St. Ann’s Cemetery, Miller.

Dessie was born on September 17, 1930 in St. Lawrence, S.D. to John and Jessie (Perrott) Fanning. Dessie grew up in the St. Lawrence area. She graduated from St. Lawrence High School in 1949 and attended Northern State College. After graduation, Dessie worked in a small school house as a teacher in rural Holabird, SD. Dessie often spoke of her years as a telephone operator and the many friends she made and kept for life. She married Eugene K. Price on September 8, 1954; to that union they had six sons and one daughter.

Dessie was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, St. Cecilia’s Altar Society, and prayer chain for many years. Dessie held a job and could be found at Helping Hands thrift store. She so enjoyed visiting with her friends and customers in what she considered her “Main Street living room.” Dessie always had a smile and a wave for the people walking by.

Her priorities in life were faith and family.

Dessie is survived by her children, six sons: Dana (Kim) Price of Mitchell, S.D., Brad (Amanda) Price of Box Elder, S.D., Craig (Dawn) Price of Miller, S.D., Shane (Ronda) Price of Huron, S.D., Chris (Beth) Price of Bruce, S.D., and Brian (Lynda) of Kimball, S.D.; and one daughter, Gina (Mike) Ortmeier of Miller, S.D. Dessie had 22 grandchildren and six great grandchildren; one sister, Beth Veskrna, Mesa, Ariz.; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Price of Fort Collins, Colo., and Irene Fanning of St. Lawrence, S.D.; one brother-in-law, Bernie Coss of Miller, S.D.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene; her parents, John and Jessie; mother-in-law, Sylvia Conan; five brothers, Vincent, Joe “Bub”, Gary, Larry and Jack; six sisters, Leone Perkins, Cleo Bryant, Lorraine Smithers, Nadine Fanning, Ann Miller and Donna Coss; one great-grandchild, Luke Anthony; and one brother-in-law, Roy “Don” Price.
