Clifford Lee Rediger, 89, died Monday, March 4, 2013, at the Golden Living Center in Pierre, S.D.

Funeral services were held at Faith Lutheran Church, Pierre, on Tuesday, March 12. Interment was at the G.A.R. Cemetery in Miller, S.D. on Tuesday afternoon.

Clif was born July 16, 1923 in Milford, Neb. to Christian and Magdalena Rediger, the eighth child of thirteen children. In September of that year the family moved to a farm in the Ree Hills, southwest of Miller, S.D. Clif attended school through the eighth grade, but because help was needed on the farm he was unable to continue. He always regretted being unable to get his high school diploma and one of his desires was for his children to finish high school and if possible attend college, which they did. For a short time he also went to Montana and worked as a ranch hand.

Clif joined the US Navy and served briefly in WW II. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946. On October 14, 1948 he married Velda Kost and together they had four children. They raised their children while farming and ranching southwest of Miller.

Clif and Velda retired from ranching in 1984 and moved to a home overlooking the river in Ft. Pierre. When he was not fishing on the river himself, he was often watching the number of fishing boats and hoping the fishermen saved a few fish for him. Anyone who knew Clif, knew of his passion for fishing. In retirement in Ft. Pierre, he remained active, greatly enjoying working for the Beastrom’s cattle ranch.

In addition to his great passion for fishing, he enjoyed playing cards both in Miller, and for twenty some years after moving to Ft. Pierre, Clif and Velda continued to meet frequently with friends from Miller to play cards. He also enjoyed hunting, meeting his buddies for coffee, and dancing.

He was an active member of the VFW and volunteered often driving the VFW van to Sturgis. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Miller, serving on several boards. In Pierre, he was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church and served in various areas of ministry. One of the recent highlights of his life was going to Washington, D.C. with the Honor Flight three years ago to see the WWII memorial.

Clif is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Velda; their three children and spouses, Sonya and Duane Yager of Missoula, Mont.; Corliss and Ben Wyatt of Aurora, Colo.; and Russell and Donna of Germany. He is survived by grandchildren, Jason and Melinda Yager of Manhattan, Mont.; Kevin and Karina Yager of Bozeman, Mont.; Robbyn Yager of Bozeman, Mont.; Jared Wyatt and Michael Collier of Calgary, Canada; and Tech Sargent Jeffrey and Vanessa Wyatt of Nevada. He is also survived by great-grandchildren, Sofia, Rebekah, Clara, Laurel and Katherine Yager; mother-in-law, Annette Kost of Pierre; and his Elaine, Doris and Florence.

He was preceded in death by his son Jeffery Rediger, and Jeff’s children, Dustin and Shelby Rediger.
