South Dakota tale…fact or fiction?

(Editor’s note: The following was e-mailed from Diana Tong, after an earlier conversation about the information. It was apparently printed at one time in the Wessington Springs True Dakotan. True Dakotan staff couldn’t remember about the article’s publication, but offered to let Tong look through their old issues. I have not been able to locate any more information, but would welcome hearing from anyone who has. Is the following true, or merely a story?)

    Blachford sentenced for shooting endangered species

    United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson has announced that a Miller, S.D. man pled guilty and was sentenced for killing an endangered whooping crane.

    Jeff Blachford, age 26, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on February 13, 2013 and pled guilty to one count of violating the Federal Endangered Species Act. Blachford was sentenced to $85,000 in restitution, two years of probation, and a $25 assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund.     HUNTING SUCCESS. Bernie Rombough, Miller, couldn’t have been happier after he shot his first (very large) elk. He had 10 years of preferences to draw a tag. The elk was shot Thursday, Oct. 4 southwest of Spearfish on “Old Baldy Mountain” by Iron Creek Lake.

    2012 hunting and fishing licenses now on sale

    Hunters and anglers looking to get a jump on the upcoming 2012 seasons in South Dakota can now purchase their new licenses. However, 2011 licenses will be valid through January 31, 2012, for fishing, small game and waterfowl hunting.

    “Although 2010 licenses remain valid until January 31, we encourage hunters and anglers to renew their licenses early in the year so they don’t forget to renew before their first outings in February,” said South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department Licensing Supervisor Shon Eide. “We find many

    GFP asks hunters, landowners to report any dead deer

    The state Game, Fish and Parks Department has documented a few white-tailed deer found dead across South Dakota, and early reports point to epizootic hemorrhagic disease or EHD, which commonly affects white-tailed deer in the fall.

    “This is the time of year when we receive these reports, and it is hard to tell the extent of the impact at this time,” said Steve Griffin, a GFP wildlife biologist. “The virus is carried by a biting midge, which can remain prevalent until a hard freeze kills the midges.”
