Alfred D. Kennell, 88, of Norfolk, VA, died May 22, 2013.

A funeral service was held at Wednesday, May 29, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel by the Rev. Leila Cutler. Masonic Rites were held at the funeral home during the service. A graveside service was held Thursday, May 30, at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, VA.

He was born in Hibbing, Minn. He lived on a farm with his family and grew up in the Miller, S.D. area.

He was the owner of the House of Eggs restaurant and had retired from the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Willis Fentress Masonic Lodge #296 and the Khedive Shrine.

According to his children, “Our father was a gentleman and a scholar, a judge of good women and fine whiskey, and he was always better than the average bear.”

Alfred will be missed by five daughters, Laura Fazendin, Linda Gatling, Diana Daversa Schompert, Mary Truman and Teresa Kennell; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Hazel; brother, Gene; adopted children, Tony and Marla Penny; and a host of close friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Kennell; and his son, Robert Kennell.
